About The Bridges Golf Club
The Bridges Golf Club opened in 1999 in the Gale Ranch development on San Ramon's east side, about 35 miles from downtown San Francisco. Johnny Miller and Damian Pascuzzo, then working with the Robert Muir Graves design firm, routed the course through the canyon-cut foothills below Mount Diablo. The original design proved punishing enough that in 2013 architect Jay Blasi led a renovation that removed more than 80 bunkers to improve playability and everyday maintenance.
On the course
This is a modern canyon course, and the scorecard's 6,861 yards from the back tees understates the workload. Barrancas cross the fairways, drop-offs line the landing zones, and the 73.6 rating and 138 slope reflect a steady diet of forced carries and elevation change. Two holes feature split fairways that ask for a decision off the tee, and the 15th and 18th both demand two forced carries to reach the green. The finisher ends at an 85-yard-long green, and the rye putting surfaces run fast and sloped throughout.
Who it suits
The club is a daily-fee facility that trades on a private-club feel, and reviewers generally rate conditioning good to excellent, with the greens a frequent highlight. Carts are included in the green fee, which is sensible given the climbs between holes; walking is permitted but strenuous. Mid- and high-handicappers should bring extra balls for the barrancas. Pace is usually reasonable, and value opinions vary with the tee-time price paid.
Practice facilities include a driving range, putting green, and short-game area, plus instruction through The Bridges Golf Academy. The Mediterranean-style clubhouse holds a golf shop and event spaces with San Ramon Valley views, and the club does a steady wedding and banquet trade. Pick The Bridges when you want one of the East Bay's sternest target-golf tests at a daily-fee price; pick somewhere flatter if repeated forced carries wear you down.
