Diablo Hills opened in 1975 beside Heather Farm Park in Walnut Creek, and it carries a stronger architectural pedigree than most short courses. The design is by Robert Muir Graves, the Northern California architect who served as president of the American Society of Golf Course Architects and whose local portfolio includes Boundary Oak across town; course listings also record a late-1970s revision by Algie Pulley. It sits on Marchbanks Drive across from John Muir Medical Center, about five minutes from downtown Walnut Creek and I-680.

On the course

The par-34 card squeezes real variety into 2,302 yards: five par 4s running from about 254 to 328 yards, three par 3s between roughly 88 and 140, and an uphill par 5 at the eighth of just under 490 yards that the operator bills as the only par 5 on any nine-hole course in the area. The terrain is genuinely hilly, fairways thread tight corridors past condominiums and neighborhood streets, and sand shows up constantly, with reviewers noting bunkers at nearly every hole. Higher ground opens views toward Mt. Diablo.

Who it suits

The practical case is a legitimate nine you can fit into a spare morning or after work, with an 18-hole option for anyone who wants to go around twice. Green fees stay modest, with senior and junior discounts, and while walking is common the hills make it honest exercise. Recent reviewers rate conditions well, singling out the greens and bunkers; the recurring gripe is pace when the tee sheet fills on busy days. It suits juniors and newer players as readily as low handicappers tuning their irons.

Facilities are lean: there is a putting green and a pro shop, but no driving range, so plan to warm up before you arrive or get there early to roll putts. The Greenery Bar & Grill on site serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily. Choose Diablo Hills when you want more golf than a pitch-and-putt offers without committing a full afternoon; that par-5 eighth gives it a demand for full swings most executive-length nines cannot match.
