Diablo Hills Golf Course
Walnut Creek, California
About Diablo Hills Golf Course
Diablo Hills carries a better architectural pedigree than most short courses. It was designed by Robert Muir Graves, the prolific Northern California architect who served as president of the American Society of Golf Course Architects in 1974-75, and opened in 1975 next to Heather Farm Park in Walnut Creek. A few directories date the Graves design work to 1968, but 1975 is the opening year most consistently cited.
On the course
The scorecard is where this executive nine separates itself. At 2,302 yards and par 34, it plays five par 4s, three par 3s, and — unusually for a course this size — a genuine par 5 at the eighth, making Diablo Hills the only nine-hole course in the area where you can hit driver, fairway wood, and still have a shot in. Greens are bentgrass, there are no water hazards, and the course rates 32.8 with a 105 slope, so it is honest without being punishing.
Who it suits
That mix makes it a practical choice rather than a destination round: a full-swing warm-up for better players, a low-pressure loop for beginners and juniors, and a genuine nine-hole game for anyone squeezing golf around work. Note that there is no driving range on site, so arrive ready to play off the first tee.
Logistics are easy. The course sits about five minutes from I-680 and downtown Walnut Creek, across from John Muir Medical Center, with Heather Farm Park's trails and ponds alongside. It is a walkable loop with carts available, a restaurant on the property, and green fees around $25 with discounts for seniors 60-plus and juniors 16 and under — one of the cheaper ways in the East Bay to play a Graves design.
