About Boundary Oak Golf Course
Boundary Oak opened in 1969 as Walnut Creek's municipal course, a Robert Muir Graves design set on the rolling western foothills of Mount Diablo. Graves, among Northern California's most prolific golf architects, routed eighteen holes through old-growth walnut, oak, pine, and eucalyptus, with the mountain in view for much of the round. The course is still owned by the City of Walnut Creek and managed by CourseCo, and it has anchored public golf in central Contra Costa County ever since.
On the course
From the back tees Boundary Oak plays 7,100 yards at par 72, carrying a 73.8 rating and a 134 slope, and the land does as much work as the scorecard. Fairways rise and fall over honest elevation change, and the greens supply the real defense: quick, noticeably sloped, and severe when a putt runs downhill. Reviewers point to the par 4s at holes 4, 9, 15, and 16 as the layout's backbone and generally call the back nine, with its demanding par 5s, the tougher half.
Who it suits
The practical case is strong. Despite the rolling ground the course is regularly walked, and recent reviewers describe greens that roll fast and true with fairways that hold up well through the dry season. As a city-owned facility it prices below the region's daily-fee headliners, and multiple tee sets let mid-handicappers pick a sane yardage while single-digit players get a legitimate championship-length test from the tips.
Practice amenities run deeper than the muni norm: a driving range fitted with Toptracer Range technology, three practice greens, and a full pro shop, plus the Taphouse Bar & Grill for afterward. Instruction comes through the on-site Dave DeLong Golf Academy, alongside junior camps and First Tee programming. Pick Boundary Oak if you want a full-length, tree-lined East Bay test with real practice infrastructure at a municipal price.
