Boundary Oak Golf Course opened in 1969 as the City of Walnut Creek's municipal 18-hole course, designed by Robert Muir Graves, ASGCA. The course is owned by the City and has been operated under contract by CourseCo, Inc. since 2009, with the management agreement most recently renewed through 2032. It remains the only 18-hole public course inside Walnut Creek and one of the busiest munis in Contra Costa County, hosting roughly 65,000 rounds and 10,000 tournament rounds annually.

On the course

The layout is routed across the western foothills of Mount Diablo, and the terrain defines the round: holes follow the natural contours of the slope rather than relying on manufactured elevation changes, and the gravitational pull of the mountain affects ball roll and putting lines on nearly every green. From the back tees the course measures 7,063 yards to a par of 72, with a 73.8 rating and 132 slope. The opening hole is a par 4 that plays over a lake with a center fountain to a fairway sloping left, setting the tone for a layout that rewards left-to-right ball flight and disciplined approach play.

Who it suits

Practice and clubhouse facilities have been substantially modernized in recent years. The 30,000-square-foot clubhouse, remodeled in 2015, houses the pro shop and the Taphouse grill on the lower level with event and banquet space upstairs, and the driving range was reconstructed with Toptracer Range technology. The course suits mid-handicap and better players who want a genuine test from the back tees, but the multiple tee sets and walkable routing also make it a reasonable choice for casual rounds and tournament play in the East Bay.
