About Diablo Creek Golf Course
Diablo Creek Golf Course opened in 1963 as Concord's municipal course, designed by Bob E. Baldock, the architect behind dozens of California's postwar public layouts. Robert Muir Graves reworked the routing in 1990, producing the par-71 course that plays today. The City of Concord still owns the property, which sits on Port Chicago Highway just off Highway 4 beside the former Concord Naval Weapons Station, and in late 2025 the city moved course maintenance to a new locally run operator after nearly two decades under BrightView.
On the course
At 6,896 yards from the back tees, Diablo Creek plays longer than most East Bay munis, and the two nines have distinct personalities. The front nine is open and stretched out, with clear views toward Mount Diablo and afternoon wind off nearby Suisun Bay that can turn the longer holes into real work. The back nine tightens considerably, threading between mature trees, and water comes into play on several holes. The terrain stays flat throughout, so the walk itself adds no difficulty.
Who it suits
That flat ground makes it one of the more walkable full-length courses in the area, and municipal green fees keep it among the East Bay's better values. Reviewers note the greens have been in strong shape lately, though pace of play draws complaints on busy weekends and drainage suffers after heavy winter rain. It suits mid-handicappers who want a genuine test off the tee without paying resort rates, and it is a short walk from North Concord/Martinez BART, a rarity in Bay Area golf.
The practice setup is a real asset: a lighted, partly covered driving range open into the evening, plus a putting green and short-game area. The pro shop offers lessons and club fitting, and the course hosts First Tee, Kids on Course, and PGA HOPE programs for juniors and veterans. Legends, the on-site sports bar and grill, overlooks the course from its patio. Pick Diablo Creek for an honest, full-length municipal round where you can practice, play, and eat without leaving the property.
