About Lake Chabot Golf Course
Lake Chabot Golf Course opened in 1923 in the hills above East Oakland, laid out by Scottish-born architect William Lock, who also left his mark on the original Cal Club routing and nearby Lake Merced. A municipal fixture for more than a century, it hosts the Oakland City Championship, an event itself approaching its hundredth year, and it was home turf for Tony Lema, the 1964 Open Championship winner, who displayed his trophy at the club.
On the course
The scorecard reads par 72 at 5,984 yards, with a 69.3 rating and 119 slope, but the numbers undersell the terrain. Lock's routing tumbles across genuinely steep hillsides, so flat lies are rare and club selection becomes a constant exercise in judging elevation. Small greens reward precise approaches, and the par-3 ninth plunges roughly four stories from tee to green. The back nine climbs high enough for views of San Francisco Bay and the skyline before the famous finisher: the 673-yard par-6 18th, a double dogleg that drops more than 200 feet to the green and is billed as the only par 6 west of the Mississippi.
Who it suits
As a value play, Lake Chabot is one of the East Bay's most affordable full-length rounds, with a relaxed muni atmosphere. Reviewers note conditions have improved noticeably following recent course and property improvements, and off-peak rounds can move in about three and a half hours. Be honest about the hills, though: regulars call it billy-goat golf, and most players take a cart, while fit walkers get a serious workout with a scenic payoff.
The property totals 27 holes, pairing the championship 18 with a 9-hole executive par-3 course that suits juniors and beginners. Practice amenities include a driving range, putting greens, a chipping area, and a pro shop, with lessons and a junior golf academy on site, plus the Par 6 Cafe for post-round food. Pick Lake Chabot for quirk, history, and elevation-fueled fun at municipal prices.
