About Sunnyvale Golf Course
Sunnyvale Golf Course opened in 1968 as the City of Sunnyvale's full-length municipal course, laid out by David W. Kent on flat ground near the junction of Highways 101 and 237, next door to Moffett Field. Donald Knott and Gary Linn are credited with later design work. Together with the city's executive nine at Sunken Gardens, it forms a two-course municipal operation that Sunnyvale still runs today.
On the course
The par-70 layout stretches from about 5,170 yards to 6,248 across three sets of tees, with a 70.1 rating and 117 slope from the back. Fairways are flat, wide, and framed by mature trees, and the routing mixes straight holes with doglegs while working bunkers and a handful of water holes into the round. The greens are medium-sized and smooth, without dramatic breaks, which makes this a course where a good ball-striking day actually turns into a score.
Who it suits
The course's calling card is convenience. It is flat enough to walk without a second thought, hand carts and electric carts are available for those who ride, and reviewers describe conditions that hold up well for a busy municipal facility. The three tee options let it fit beginners working toward a first full-length round, seniors who prefer level ground, and Silicon Valley locals after an affordable loop minutes off the freeway.
On-site practice amenities are modest, with a putting green and a golf shop that keeps sunrise-to-sunset hours; the operation's driving range and instruction program live at the sister course, Sunken Gardens, a short drive away on South Wolfe Road. Pick Sunnyvale when you want an unintimidating regulation 18 that rewards a freely swung driver and a steady putter, and pair it with a range session there when your swing needs work.
