Los Lagos Golf Course
San Jose, California
About Los Lagos Golf Course
Los Lagos opened in April 2002, a City of San Jose municipal course managed by CourseCo on land beside Coyote Creek south of downtown. Brian Costello of Belmont-based JMP Golf Design Group drew the routing, threading holes around the creek's sensitive riparian corridor rather than through it, and that environmental care earned the property Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary status. The name is Spanish for the lakes.
On the course
The scorecard is the most distinctive thing about the course. Par 68 covers 5,393 yards from the back tees through an unusual mix of nine par 3s, four par 4s, and five par 5s, so nearly every hole is either a one-shotter or a genuine birdie-chance three-shotter, with few of the medium-length par 4s that fill ordinary cards. Iron play decides the round: you hit more short and mid irons into greens in one lap here than most full-length courses ask for in two.
Who it suits
The practical case is speed and approachability. The ground is flat and easy to walk, the modest yardage keeps rounds moving faster than a conventional 18, and the layout flatters beginners, juniors, and seniors while the five par 5s still give longer hitters something to chase. For established players it works as an iron-and-wedge tune-up that never feels like a pitch-and-putt.
Practice is a genuine strength: the two-tiered, lighted driving range has 42 mat stalls facing a 250-yard landing area with two target greens, and it stays open into the evening, making it one of San Jose's few night practice options. There is a putting area, a pro shop, an on-site restaurant, and a full calendar of lessons, camps, and clinics. Pick Los Lagos to sharpen your scoring clubs, introduce someone to the game, or fit a real 18 holes into a shorter day.
