About Deep Cliff Golf Course
Deep Cliff Golf Course opened in 1961 in the Cupertino foothills, designed by Clark Glasson, the Bay Area architect whose work also includes Palo Alto Hills Country Club and Sunken Gardens. Glasson laid out an 18-hole, par-60 executive course on a compact site along Stevens Creek, and the design has changed little since: a short course built to classic standards, with genuine doglegs and bunkering. In 2007, Golf Range Magazine named Deep Cliff the top short course in America.
On the course
The scorecard lists twelve par 3s and six par 4s across 3,305 yards, and the course plays bigger than the number suggests. Stevens Creek winds through the property and comes into play on several holes, most of the par 4s bend one direction or the other, and the small greens are protected by sand. Fairways are tree-lined but fairly generous, so the driver mostly stays in the bag while mid-irons and wedges do the scoring. Nothing is long here; every hole asks for a precise number.
Who it suits
The practical case is speed and approachability. The property is flat and compact, an easy walk by any standard, and a full 18 moves faster than a regulation round. Reviewers consistently recommend it as a starting point for beginners and a low-stress option for seniors and after-work golfers, while better players treat it as an iron-and-wedge tune-up between rounds on full-length courses.
There is no full driving range; warm-up happens on a 35-yard netted range, and the practice centerpiece is an 8,000-square-foot putting green that matches the course's short-game emphasis. A golf shop, the DC Taphouse grill, and a busy instruction program with group classes and a juniors academy round out the facility. Pick Deep Cliff when you want eighteen real holes in about half the usual time, or when your scoring clubs need work; it is one of the Bay Area's best short-game classrooms.
