About San Jose Municipal Golf Course
San Jose Municipal Golf Course opened in 1968 on a 145-acre site in North San Jose, wedged between Interstates 880 and 680 at 1560 Oakland Road. The 18-hole layout was designed by Robert Muir Graves, the Bay Area-based architect responsible for dozens of public courses throughout Northern California. The City of San Jose owns the property; day-to-day operations are handled by CourseCo, Inc., which manages a number of municipal facilities across the state.
On the course
The routing sits on flat valley-floor terrain and plays to a par of 72 at roughly 6,700 yards from the tips, with a course rating around 71.2 and a slope in the 119-123 range depending on the tee set. Fairways are wide and largely tree-lined rather than tree-pinched, and trees rarely dictate strategy off the tee. Bentgrass greens and tees sit over winter rye fairways, and all 18 greens were rebuilt in 2010. The walkable layout and open corridors make it a practical option for golfers who prefer to carry a bag rather than ride.
Who it suits
Practice facilities are the standout amenity: a double-deck, lighted driving range with 60 hitting stations, two short-game greens for chipping and pitching, and a separate practice putting green with bunkers. The footprint suits beginners working through their first rounds, junior programs, and lesson students, while mid-handicappers can post a score without being punished by forced carries or heavily contoured greens. Stronger players generally treat San Jose Muni as a steady value round and a convenient range stop rather than a championship test, particularly given its proximity to downtown San Jose, Milpitas, and Silicon Valley workplaces along the 880 corridor.
