About Coyote Creek Valley Course
The Valley Course opened in 2001 as the second of two Jack Nicklaus designs at Coyote Creek Golf Club, joining the Tournament Course that debuted two years earlier in the Coyote Valley at the southern edge of San Jose. The young club earned its stripes quickly, hosting the Senior PGA Tour's Siebel Classic in March 2001 and again in 2002. Today the Tournament Course serves the club's members, which makes the Valley Course the property's public 18 and the way most Bay Area golfers experience Nicklaus's work here.
On the course
From the back of five tee sets the Valley plays 7,066 yards at par 72, rated 74.0 with a 132 slope, yet it can be teed as short as 5,187 yards. It is the flatter and more forgiving of the two layouts, with bluegrass fairways, undulating greens, and bunkers carrying most of the defense. The par-3 seventh is the shot everyone remembers, 220 yards from the tips and all carry over a lake, with bunkers right and a collection area left of the green. A chain of four lakes and two waterfalls anchors the finishing holes, and the wind that pours down the valley on most afternoons stiffens the whole back stretch.
Who it suits
Reviewers praise the greens and fairway conditioning, the pace of play, and the value for a course of this scale, and the wide spread between tee sets keeps the yardage honest without being cruel. It draws its strongest marks from intermediate and better players who want a genuine full-length test, and anyone holding an afternoon time should bring an extra club and a wind plan.
Practice facilities include a natural grass range, a practice bunker, a pitching and chipping area, and a putting green, with a pro shop on site. Choose the Valley Course when you want tournament-scale Nicklaus architecture at public-course prices; it is the biggest championship-length test on the southern edge of the San Jose market.
