About Rancho del Pueblo Golf Course

Rancho del Pueblo opened in 2000 on the East San Jose site of the old Thunderbird Golf Course, a private club that operated from 1965 until June 1997. The City of San Jose redeveloped the property as a public executive course, with Robert Muir Graves and Damian Pascuzzo handling the design. Graves had been the architect of the original Thunderbird routing, and Pascuzzo — his longtime design partner — led the rebuild into the current par-28 configuration.

On the course

The layout covers 1,418 yards from the back tees and 1,122 from the forward gold tees, with a course rating of 35.5 and a slope of 113. Eight of the nine holes are par 3s ranging from the 86-yard second to the 194-yard sixth, joined by a single 250-yard par 4. Three lakes and extensive bunkering shape the routing, and the property is certified as an Audubon International Cooperative Sanctuary. A lighted driving range, chipping green, and putting green round out the practice facilities, and the course is managed by CourseCo on behalf of the city.

Who it suits

The short yardage and par-3-heavy routing make Rancho del Pueblo a practical fit for beginners working on iron play, juniors, and experienced players looking for a quick round or a place to sharpen short-game and approach shots. Walking is straightforward given the compact footprint, and the location off Highway 101 near King Road suits weekday after-work rounds. FootGolf is also offered on the property. Players expecting a full-length par-72 test should look elsewhere in the South Bay, but for an inexpensive nine that emphasizes iron accuracy over driver distance, the course fills a clear niche in San Jose's municipal golf network.
