About Half Moon Bay - Ocean Course

The Ocean Course at Half Moon Bay Golf Links opened in 1997, designed by Arthur Hills as a links-style counterpoint to the property's 1973 Old Course. Hills spread wide, firm fairways across the bluffs above the Pacific, framed them with native grasses and shared bunker complexes, and used a traditional out-and-back routing that leaves the clubhouse at the 1st and does not return until the 18th. The course took a national stage in 2008, hosting the LPGA's Samsung World Championship, won by Paula Creamer at nine under par.

On the course

The 6,854-yard, par-72 card is unusual, with five par 3s and five par 5s, and the ocean is visible from every hole. Onshore wind and coastal fog are the true defense. The short par-4 2nd asks for a carry over a wide gully, the par-3 7th is the only hole where water appears, and the finish is the headline: 16, 17, and 18 run along the clifftop, where anything left of the 17th, a hole often compared with Pebble Beach's 7th, is gone for good. Undulating greens and firm turf reward the ground game, a rarity in Northern California.

Who it suits

This is a resort round with resort polish. Forecaddies can be arranged, the 18th green sits below the Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay, where a bagpiper often closes the day at sunset, and reviewers advise planning around the weather, since morning fog and afternoon wind play like two different courses. It suits golfers chasing an authentic links experience without a flight to Scotland.

There is no full driving range on site; preparation means two putting greens, a 50-yard chipping area, and a practice bunker, with an independent range a few minutes away in town. Club and shoe rentals make it an easy course to play while traveling. Between the two Half Moon Bay layouts, choose the Ocean when views and links golf matter more than length: it is the shorter, more open of the pair, and it keeps the Pacific in the frame all day.
