About Spring Valley Golf Course
Spring Valley Golf Course owes its existence to a lottery ticket. Ray Anderson won the Irish Sweepstakes in the early 1950s and, with a group of local investors, used the windfall to buy land in what was then rural Milpitas, laying out 18 holes with no formal architect involved. The project nearly died when the state reclaimed the ground under eminent domain for a proposed reservoir, but the land came back to Anderson with a long-term lease and the course opened in 1956. It then ran for decades with remarkably little change, which is much of its charm.
On the course
The layout sits in a valley off Calaveras Boulevard between San Jose and Fremont, rolling gently through tree-lined fairways with the surrounding hills as a backdrop. At par 70 and 6,140 yards from the tips, with a 68.8 rating and 114 slope, it is one of the friendlier scorecards in the South Bay, and four tee sets run down to a 3,480-yard forward option. Water provides the teeth, with lakes in play around the ninth and eighteenth, and the Bermuda greens roll true but carry more slope than first-timers expect.
Who it suits
The practical case is value. Reviewers repeatedly call Spring Valley one of the best deals in Silicon Valley and praise the fairway conditioning for a course at its price point. The honest caveat is pace, since busy tee sheets can stretch rounds toward five hours even on weekday mornings, so early times are the smart play. The forgiving slope makes it a natural fit for mid- and high-handicappers, juniors, and anyone easing back into the game.
Facilities cover the basics well, with a driving range, putting green, and chipping area for warming up, plus a pro shop in the clubhouse. Spring Valley is the right pick when you want an unpretentious, affordable 18 holes with a genuinely good origin story rather than a championship examination; golfers chasing length and a stern slope rating should look toward the region's tournament cards instead.
