About Skylinks at Buchanan Fields

Skylinks at Buchanan Fields dates to 1955, when Robert Muir Graves, one of Northern California's most prolific public-course architects, laid out an executive nine on flat land beside Concord's Buchanan Field airport. The course faded badly through the 2000s and 2010s and came close to disappearing altogether. In October 2023 two longtime local golfers took it over and ran it as a family operation, and the turnaround that followed was notable enough that Golf.com profiled Skylinks as a struggling muni saved from ruin.

On the course

The nine itself is honest and quick: five par 3s and four short par 4s across level ground, a shade under 2,000 yards from the back tees with a 29.6 rating and 83 slope. There are no hills and no forced carries, so scoring comes down to wedges and putting, with departing aircraft supplying the soundtrack. Most groups get around in two hours or less.

Who it suits

The practical case is value and momentum. Since the ownership change, reviewers consistently note improving conditions, from fresh sod and topdressed greens to new tee markers, flags and carts, along with unusually friendly staff. Green fees sit in the mid-$20s, among the lowest nine-hole rates in the East Bay, and the flat routing is about as easy a walk as golf offers. It suits beginners, families, juniors and anyone easing back into the game.

The bigger draw may be the practice operation: a 72-bay lighted driving range that opens at 5 a.m. most mornings and stays lit until midnight, plus a short-game zone with putting and chipping greens and a practice bunker. Loaner clubs are free at the range, a kids zone keeps families around, and lessons run from head professional Russell King and his staff alongside First Tee junior programming. Pick Skylinks for cheap reps and low-pressure nines rather than a championship test.
