About Santa Teresa Golf Club
Santa Teresa Golf Club opened in 1963 on Bernal Road at the southern tip of San Jose, tucked against the base of the Santa Teresa foothills beside Santa Teresa County Park. George E. Santana designed the original eighteen, Robert Muir Graves reworked the greens and hazards in 1982, and Gene Bates added Shorty, a 9-hole par-27 short course, in 1996, giving the property a rare two-course setup for a South Bay public facility.
On the course
The main course plays 6,738 yards at par 71, rated 72.3 with a 128 slope, and it is really two courses in one. The front nine runs over mostly flat ground, while the back nine climbs into the foothills, where the terrain adds sidehill lies, elevation changes, and stretches with no houses or roads in view. On the card the holes swing from the 134-yard par-3 sixth to a par-5 eighteenth that stretches to 566 yards from the tips, a genuine three-shot finisher.
Who it suits
Reviewers consistently praise the greens, and the mid-range pricing makes it one of the more affordable full-length rounds in San Jose, though pace can slow at peak weekend times. Walking is allowed, with the caveat that the back nine demands legs. It fits mid-handicap regulars best: enough challenge to hold interest, not so much that a decent round turns sour.
The practice grounds include a driving range, putting green, and chipping area, backed by a resident teaching staff with unusually deep junior programming, from Little Linksters up through camps and teen classes, plus the Santa Teresa Bar and Grill for after the round. Shorty makes an ideal warmup loop or first course for kids. Pick Santa Teresa for a foothill back nine with real character at municipal-level prices.
