San Ramon Golf Club opened in 1946 as a Clark Glasson design, making it one of the older public courses in the East Bay's Tri-Valley corridor. Glasson, a prolific Northern California architect best known for Palo Alto Hills and Deep Cliff in Cupertino, laid out a parkland-style 18 that has since been absorbed by the surrounding neighborhoods just off I-680 and Alcosta Boulevard in San Ramon.

On the course

The routing plays to a par of 72 at roughly 6,459 yards from the tips, with a course rating of 71.4 and a slope of 128 — modest length by modern standards, but tight corridors lined with mature trees and homes put a premium on accuracy over distance. The course's most recognizable feature is the island green on the par-3 9th hole, which forces a committed carry over water and ranks as the signature shot of the round. Water also figures into the closing hole on the back nine, where a large lake comes into play and bookends the day with the 9th. A number of doglegs through the front and back nines keep the driver in the bag selectively, and the back nine plays noticeably longer and tougher than the front.

Practice facilities include a full driving range, a short-game area, and two putting greens, and the course is walkable with a typical pace under four and a half hours.
