About San Ramon Golf Club
San Ramon Golf Club is a Clark Glasson design from 1963, built as suburban San Ramon took shape around it. While Volk-McLain developed the Country Club Park subdivision between 1961 and 1965, Glasson, the Northern California architect behind Palo Alto Hills and the Sunol Valley courses, routed a regulation 18 across the valley floor with homes sold along its fairways. Known for years as San Ramon Royal Vista, the course took its current name and now operates as a daily-fee public layout under Western Golf Properties management.
On the course
At par 72 and 6,459 yards from the back tees, it plays as classic valley-floor parkland: flat ground, mature trees framing corridors that thread between neighborhood backyards, and kikuyu-and-bermuda fairways running into poa annua greens the course keeps smooth and quick. Accuracy off the tee matters more than raw distance. The front nine ends on the layout's calling card, a par-3 ninth played over water to an island green, and three shorter tee sets scale the course down to 4,748 yards.
Who it suits
The everyday case is straightforward. The routing is flat enough to walk without complaint, management expects rounds in roughly four to four and a half hours, and the club bills itself as the most affordable regulation 18 in the Tri-Valley. Reviewers consistently single out the greens as the best-conditioned part of the property and rate the value highly, and active men's and women's clubs run monthly tournaments and weekly nine-hole games. It suits league players, weekend regulars, and newer golfers who want a full-length course a minute off I-680.
Practice options run deeper than most courses at this price: a full-length driving range, two practice putting greens, and a chipping area, with PGA professionals teaching private lessons for all ages through a pro shop open daily from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. A 19th-hole bar covers post-round drinks, and the on-site San Ramon Waters by Wedgewood venue handles weddings and tournament banquets. Choose San Ramon for an approachable, well-kept parkland round with one genuinely dramatic swing waiting at the ninth.
