About Redwood Canyon Golf Course

Redwood Canyon Golf Course opened in 1966 as Willow Park Golf Course, a design by the father-and-son team of Bob E. Baldock and Robert L. Baldock. The layout occupies the southern end of Redwood Canyon at Anthony Chabot Regional Park, a corridor logged of its old-growth redwoods in the 1880s. When the original operators' 50-year lease expired in late 2014, the East Bay Regional Park District renamed the course in 2015 and began planting redwoods across the 130-acre property; today KemperSports manages it as a Park District facility.

On the course

The par-71 card stretches 5,801 yards from the back tees, and the number undersells the discipline required. San Leandro Creek winds through the property and comes into play on nearly every hole, while most fairways sit pinched between a hillside on one side and the creek on the other, with little rough to catch a miss before real trouble. Small greens complete the argument for course management: this is a shotmaker's layout where placement off the tee matters far more than raw distance.

Who it suits

Walking is allowed, and reviewers note that an early-morning walking round is one of the course's quiet pleasures, with weekday pace often under four hours; packed weekend tee sheets can slow things considerably. Recent reviewers consistently single out the putting surfaces for their speed and conditioning. Green fees stay in everyday-public territory, which makes this a sensible pick for mid-to-high handicappers who value accuracy over length.

Practice facilities include a water driving range, a putting green for short-game work, and a fully stocked pro shop that handles re-gripping. Instruction runs through SVGOLF, whose staff includes LPGA Class A teaching professionals offering junior academies, beginner series, and private lessons, while the Meadows Bistro covers post-round burgers and a full bar. Pick Redwood Canyon if you want a tree-lined, creek-crossed round that rewards patience and thinking your way up the canyon.
