About Poppy Ridge Golf Course
Poppy Ridge opened in 1996 as the second course owned and operated by the Northern California Golf Association, a Rees Jones design of 27 holes spread across three wine-named nines, Chardonnay, Merlot and Zinfandel, in the vineyard hills southeast of Livermore. In April 2024 the NCGA closed the property and handed architect Jay Blasi a complete rebuild, and thirteen months later, on May 31, 2025, it reopened as a single championship 18 plus a nine-hole short course called The Ridge 9.
On the course
Blasi kept the land and threw out the old concept. The new routing selects the best ground from all three former nines, trimming roughly 2,000 yards of walking and about 400 feet of elevation change, and runs wide, contoured fairways of Santa Ana bermuda into Prestige bentgrass greens with subtle movement. Hillside bunkers double as landscape transitions, their lips kept low where long irons arrive and built up around the greens, and the championship tees stretch past 7,000 yards against a 74.2 rating and 135 slope.
Who it suits
The reopening landed loudly. The NCGA cites an honorable mention from Golf Digest, The Fried Egg's pick as the most exciting new public course, and best-renovation recognition from Sports Illustrated. More practically, this is now a big course you can genuinely walk, open to the public with discounted member pricing for the NCGA's 220,000-plus golfers, and green fees sit at the premium end of the East Bay market.
The practice facilities were rebuilt to the same standard: a 1.25-acre practice area with multiple targets, a 17,000-square-foot putting green, and a chipping green flanked by two bunkers, with The Grill covering food in the clubhouse. The Ridge 9 offers a shorter option when time or legs run out. Poppy Ridge now suits golfers who want the Bay Area's newest serious championship test and are willing to pay destination rates to walk it.
