WildHawk Golf Club opened in 1997 on Vineyard Road in south Sacramento, designed by J. Michael Poellot and his JMP Golf Design Group — a firm better known for high-end work across Asia and the Pacific Rim than for municipal golf. The course is owned and operated by the Southgate Recreation & Park District, which keeps it firmly in the public-golf column and has run it for more than 25 years.

On the course

The design is links-style in character: open ground where wind becomes a genuine factor, fairways that run generously wide on the longer par 4s and par 5s, and bunkering whose unusual shapes and placement set the course apart from most public tracks in the region. Water features thread through the layout, including a cascading waterfall, and the round finishes in view of the clubhouse patio, which overlooks both the 9th and 18th greens.

Who it suits

At 6,623 yards with a 71.2 rating and 124 slope, WildHawk is a fair championship-length test rather than a brute. The wide landing areas keep higher handicaps moving, while the bunkering and wind supply the challenge for better players. Its strongest reputation is on the greens — the club promotes them as among the area's best, and reviewers regularly rate their pace and consistency highly.

The practice setup covers the full game: a driving range, practice bunker, chipping area, and putting green, with teaching pros and club fitting on site. WildHawk also partners with First Tee of Greater Sacramento on junior programs, and the WildHawk Grille serves breakfast and lunch. Green fees stay in the accessible daily-fee range you would expect from a park-district course, which is a large part of why it remains one of south Sacramento County's most popular public rounds.
