About Plumas Lake Golf & Country Club
Plumas Lake Golf & Country Club dates to 1926, when club members built the original nine holes on oak-studded ground south of Marysville in Yuba County. In 1960 the club brought in prolific California architect Bob Baldock to expand and redesign the layout into today's 18 holes. The course calls itself the "Hidden Jewel of the Sacramento Valley" and says it has twice been rated among America's top 100 public courses by Golf Digest — lofty billing for a semi-private club that welcomes public play about 30 to 40 minutes north of Sacramento, six miles off Highway 70.
On the course
The par-71 layout stretches 6,422 yards from the Black tees, where the USGA rates it 71.8/128, with Blue (6,159), White (5,760) and Gold (5,106) markers behind it. Length isn't the defense here: a drainage canal meanders through the property and affects play on 12 of the 18 holes, and mature oaks line the bermuda fairways. The greens — renovated in 2006 to be about 30 percent larger, with hybrid bent-grass surfaces — are still on the smaller side, putting a premium on approach accuracy. The 410-yard 8th plays as the number-one handicap hole.
Who it suits
This is genuinely walkable golf, on ground that is neither long nor hilly, and the practice setup outpunches the price point: a 300-yard driving range with 12 stalls, a chipping green, a practice putting green and even a dedicated practice hole. A pro shop and the on-site restaurant round out the clubhouse.
Plumas Lake suits value-minded Sacramento-area and Yuba-Sutter golfers who would rather contend with angles, oaks and water than raw length. It's a classic-era course at everyday prices, and the semi-private setup means the turf gets member-level attention while the tee sheet stays open to the public.
