Emerald Lakes Golf Course
Elk Grove, California
About Emerald Lakes Golf Course
Emerald Lakes opened in 1991 on former farmland along East Stockton Boulevard, designed by Rick Yount to give fast-growing Elk Grove a public place to play after the town's 1980s boom. The Cosumnes Community Services District acquired the course in 2006 and has operated it as a community facility ever since; it now counts more than 100,000 visitors a year.
On the course
This is more than a pitch-and-putt: par 33 and 2,371 yards from the white tees, with four par 3s, four par 4s, and a genuine par 5 — the 485-yard 4th, the No. 1 handicap hole. The par 3s run from a 111-yard flick to a stout 206-yard 2nd, and the 344-yard 6th and 358-yard 9th give you two more full swings with driver. Red tees measure 1,851 yards, the 1,131-yard orange tees suit juniors and newer players, and the whites carry a 31.0 rating and 106 slope for nine holes.
Who it suits
The practical case is value and walkability. Nine holes run $19 on weekdays and $24 on weekends, seniors and twilight players pay less, and juniors play for $3 anytime through Youth on Course and First Tee. Reviewers call it very walkable — flat enough for seniors pulling carts — and praise greens that stay well kept year-round, though the low-lying ground can get soggy after heavy winter rain and weekend pace can slow.
Practice is a real strength: a Trackman-equipped driving range — one of the Sacramento area's few grass ranges — plus a putting green, chipping area, and practice bunkers, with free loaner clubs for range sessions. The on-site golf academy runs junior and adult programs including Operation 36, the shop handles club fittings and repairs, and a FootGolf course routed over the same nine makes it an easy family outing. It fits beginners, juniors, seniors, and anyone wanting a quick nine with one honest par 5.
