Cherry Island Golf Course
Elverta, California – 2360 Elverta Rd, Elverta, CA 95626
About Cherry Island Golf Course
Cherry Island Golf Course opened on June 1, 1990, the work of veteran California architect Robert Muir Graves, ASGCA, who designed more than 800 courses during his fifty-year career, including Quail Lodge in Carmel and La Purisima in Lompoc. The course sits on land in Elverta, about 20 minutes north of downtown Sacramento, that was previously occupied by cherry orchards — the source of the course's name. It is one of three public courses owned by Sacramento County.
On the course
Graves laid out a target-style design across rural terrain free of housing or other man-made structures, using the existing landscape with mature oak trees and four lakes that come into play throughout the round. From the championship tees the par-72 course measures roughly 6,494 to 6,600 yards, with a course rating of 70.1 and slope of 120 on the standard set of tees, and a 71.9 rating with a 129 slope from the back. The greens are known locally for running fast and true, and the routing avoids the long carries and forced layups found at tougher Sacramento-area tracks.
Who it suits
The facility includes a driving range, putting green, and chipping area, and the course is open year-round. Cherry Island suits mid- and higher-handicap players looking for a fair test at a modest green fee, as well as better players who want to work the ball around water and bunkering without being overwhelmed by length. Walkers, juniors, and regulars from the north Sacramento and Roseville areas make up much of the daily play.
