Few Sacramento-area courses carry a pedigree like Dry Creek Ranch. Architect Jack Fleming was Alister MacKenzie's longtime associate — the Irish-born builder who followed MacKenzie to California and worked with him until the doctor's death in 1934, then spent decades as steward of San Francisco's public courses, where the Fleming 9 at TPC Harding Park still bears his name. Dry Creek Ranch, opened in Galt in 1963, is one of the three dozen Northern California courses Fleming drew up in his own postwar design career.

On the course

The course itself is a classic tree-lined parkland test. Mature oaks, pines, and eucalyptus crowd the fairways, the greens are small to mid-sized and elevated, and sand and creeks are placed where they punish careless angles. At 6,725 yards it is respectable length for a par 72, but the numbers that matter are the 72.6 rating and 133 slope — this is a course where position beats power, and where the ability to shape shots around (or under) overhanging limbs decides the score.

Who it suits

That makes it a different proposition from the wide-open valley courses nearby. Golfers who enjoy plotting their way around a course tend to love it; players who insist on swinging driver from every tee box will find the trees and narrow fairways unforgiving in a hurry. Conditions have varied over the years, though recent reviews have praised the greens, and pace of play draws consistent compliments.

Practically, Dry Creek Ranch is easy to reach off Highway 99 between Sacramento and Stockton, easy to walk, and priced as an affordable daily-fee round. The facility includes a driving range, putting and chipping areas, a teaching academy, and a bar and grill for the post-round debrief.
