About Tracy Golf & Country Club

Tracy Golf & Country Club opened in 1955 as a nine-hole course designed by Robert E. Baldock, the prolific California architect behind dozens of West Coast layouts. Baldock returned to add the second nine in 1969, completing the 18-hole, par-72 routing that members play today. The club underwent a major renovation in 2014 and remains a member-owned facility that welcomes outside guest play.

On the course

The course sits at the eastern base of the Diablo Mountains in the San Joaquin Valley, roughly midway between Livermore and Modesto. Because of its rain-shadow location, it receives less rainfall than most Northern California courses and is managed as a desert-style layout, leaving rough areas natural and concentrating water on the playing corridors. The routing is unusual in that it straddles Interstate 580, with half the holes on each side of the freeway. Fairways are predominantly wide and flat with loose tree lines, wind is frequently a factor, and water comes into play on nine of the eighteen holes.

Who it suits

Five sets of tees stretch the course from 5,181 to 6,852 yards, with a rating of 73.4 and slope of 128 from the back. The opener is the toughest hole on the card: a 429-yard par-4 dogleg left rated as the No. 1 handicap. The closing 18th is a 574-yard par-5, bookending a round that starts and finishes with length. The longest hole is the 551-yard par-5 14th, while the shortest is the 151-yard 11th. Small greens, generally protected by bunkers, break subtly toward the valley floor and reward careful reading.

Tracy GCC suits players looking for a straightforward, walkable valley test with honest hazards rather than a manicured private-club experience. Beginners can gain confidence from forward tees while better players will find length and wind enough to keep the back tees interesting.
