About Sunken Gardens Golf Course
Sunken Gardens Golf Course opened in 1959 as a 9-hole executive layout designed by Clark Glasson, the prolific Northern California architect whose work also includes nearby Sunnyvale Golf Course. The course was originally built by Steven H. Barath, a former San Francisco Seals baseball player who built, owned and operated three 9-hole courses in the Bay Area; the City of Sunnyvale now owns and operates the facility at 1010 South Wolfe Road.
On the course
The course lives up to its name: it sits in a natural depression roughly 15 to 20 feet below the surrounding residential neighborhoods, a quirk of topography that gives the property a contained, pocket-park feel in the middle of dense Silicon Valley development. The 1,502-yard layout (1,538 from the back tees) plays to a par of 29 with seven par-3s and two par-4s. The longest holes are the 267-yard par-4 2nd and 6th, while the 106-yard 7th is the shortest. Course rating is 28.4 with a slope of 86, reflecting a layout that rewards accuracy over distance — tee shots have limited room to miss.
Who it suits
Practice facilities include an 18-stall driving range and putting green, making the course a practical option for beginners, juniors, and players working on their short game. The flat walk, short yardages, and quick pace (rounds commonly finish in well under two hours) suit golfers who want a low-pressure round, a tune-up before tackling a full-length course, or an evening nine after work. It is not a championship test, and players seeking a long ball-striking challenge should look elsewhere, but as an executive muni in the heart of the South Bay, Sunken Gardens fills a specific and useful niche.
