About Foxtail Golf Club South
Foxtail Golf Club's South Course is the older of two 18-hole layouts at this Rohnert Park facility, opened in 1963 and designed by Bob E. Baldock . The property was formerly known as Mountain Shadows Golf Resort before being rebranded as Foxtail. The North Course followed in 1974 and was later redesigned in 2003 by Donald Knott and Gary Linn, leaving the South as the club's original Baldock layout. The facility is now managed by CourseCo Inc.
On the course
The South plays as a parkland-style course set on the flat Sonoma County plain just east of Highway 101, stretching to roughly 6,492 yards from the back tees for a par of 71. The routing emphasizes playability over length: no water hazards come into play, but there are several strategically placed bunkers as well as trees lining the fairways . Fairways are generally rolling with mature trees framing target lines, and the greens are moderately sized with subtle undulation typical of early-1960s California parkland design.
Who it suits
Compared with the longer, redesigned North Course next door, the South is the more approachable of the two. The player-friendly South Course has remained a favorite destination of both Sonoma and Marin Counties for its playability, providing a more beginner-friendly option than the North, though there are still plenty of challenges in store . It suits higher-handicap golfers, seniors, and players who want a walkable round without forced carries, while still rewarding accurate iron play into the tree-lined corridors. In addition to the two golf courses, Foxtail has a full driving range as well as chipping and putting greens , making it a practical option for warm-up rounds and group play in the North Bay.
