About Bennett Valley Golf Course
Bennett Valley Golf Course opened in 1969 as a municipal facility in southeast Santa Rosa, designed by local architect Ben Harmon. The 18-hole, par-72 layout sits at the base of Bennett Peak, with Matanzas Creek meandering through the property and views of the surrounding Sonoma County hills. The course is operated by KemperSports and plays roughly 6,500 yards from the championship tees, with a course rating of 71.0 and a slope of 121.
On the course
The routing is a classic parkland design framed by mature native oaks, redwoods, and Monterey pines that line nearly every fairway. The trees, rather than heavy bunkering or water features, supply most of the defense: several tee shots funnel through narrow tree-lined chutes, and the small, undulating greens are well guarded and known for rolling smooth and quick. Matanzas Creek crosses several holes, adding a natural hazard through the lower portion of the property. The terrain is gently rolling rather than dramatic, making the course walkable, and push carts are permitted.
Who it suits
Bennett Valley is a straightforward, shot-placement course rather than a length test, which makes it well suited to mid- and higher-handicap players, seniors, and walkers, while the firm greens and tight tree lines still give better players something to think about. On-site amenities include a driving range with grass tees and mats, a large practice putting green, and Iron & Vine, the clubhouse restaurant with a patio overlooking the course. As one of Santa Rosa's two municipal courses, it draws a steady local following and hosts regular NCGA qualifying events through the Bennett Valley Golf Club.
