Valley of the Moon Club
Santa Rosa, California – 7025 Oakmont Dr, Santa Rosa, CA 95409
About Valley of the Moon Club
Valley of the Moon Club opened in 1964 as the West Course at Oakmont Golf Club, designed by California architect Ted Robinson Sr. The facility takes its current name from Jack London's well-known nickname for the Sonoma Valley, where the author lived on a nearby ranch. A second Robinson layout, originally the East Course and now branded as the Sugarloaf Course, was added in 1973 as a par-63 executive companion, giving the property 36 holes managed today by CourseCo.
On the course
The main 18-hole Valley of the Moon Course plays to a par of 72 at roughly 6,379 yards from the back tees, with a course rating of 71.1 and a slope of 124 on rye turf. The parkland routing winds through the Oakmont retirement community east of Santa Rosa, with several holes squeezed between homes and a handful of mature trees standing directly in the fairways. Robinson's design leans on creeks, small ponds, and bunkers tucked around large, undulating greens rather than length, so accuracy and shot shaping matter more than raw power.
Who it suits
The shorter Sugarloaf Course measures just over 4,000 yards across nine par 3s and nine par 4s, with several of the one-shotters stretching past 160 yards. The two courses share a double-ended driving range, short-game area, and practice putting green, along with two pro shops and a full-service restaurant and banquet facility at the clubhouse.
Valley of the Moon suits players who prefer a walkable, tree-lined parkland test over a resort-style layout: seniors and beginners gravitate to Sugarloaf, while mid-handicappers and locals use the main course as a steady, strategic round in wine country without the green fees of nearby destination tracks.
