About TPC Harding Park - Fleming 9
The Fleming 9 opened in 1961 as a compact executive course tucked inside the perimeter of TPC Harding Park's 18-hole championship layout along Lake Merced. It was designed by Jack Fleming, San Francisco's first city golf caretaker and a protégé of Alister MacKenzie who authored a number of Bay Area municipal courses. The nine is named in his honor and remains owned by the City and County of San Francisco, managed by the PGA TOUR as part of the broader TPC Harding Park facility.
On the course
The routing folds neatly into the interior of the championship course, sharing the same Monterey cypress and eucalyptus framing that defines Harding Park. The course plays to a par of 30, measuring 2,165 yards from the back tees and 1,865 yards from the forward tees, with six par-3s and three par-4s. The longest hole is the opener, a 405-yard par-4, and the par-3s range from roughly 140 yards up to a 235-yard test. Greens are small and well-bunkered, and the rough is grown in similar to the main course, which puts a premium on club selection and accuracy rather than length. The course was regrown and reseeded with ryegrass in late 2020 following the PGA Championship next door.
Who it suits
The Fleming 9 is the home of the First Tee of San Francisco and has long served as a teaching ground for juniors and beginners, with discounted rates for San Francisco and Bay Area residents. It suits new golfers learning the game, players looking for a quick walkable loop, and anyone wanting to sharpen iron play on a course that shares conditioning and character with a major-championship venue. Tee times are limited; walk-ups are the norm.
