About Lincoln Park Golf Course
Lincoln Park Golf Course is the oldest golf course owned and operated by the City of San Francisco. Golf began here in 1902 when local enthusiasts laid out a rudimentary three-hole course on land that had served as the Golden Gate Cemetery, a city burying ground established in 1868 that once held roughly 10,000 remains. The course expanded to 14 holes by 1914 and reached its full 18-hole configuration in 1917. Tom Bendelow is generally credited as the 18-hole designer, and Jack Fleming redesigned the routing in the 1960s. Construction of the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in 1923 prompted further remodeling, and the museum now sits in the middle of the property with five holes finishing near its grounds.
On the course
The par-68 layout occupies the northwestern tip of the San Francisco peninsula above Lands End, with cypress and pine framing tight, undulating fairways on rolling and sometimes steep terrain. From the blue tees it measures 5,416 yards, making it one of the shorter 18-hole municipal courses in the region. The 17th tee delivers the course's defining view, a full look at both towers of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Marin Headlands, while the 7th fairway and 13th tee open up panoramas of downtown San Francisco and Mount Diablo on clear days.
Who it suits
Lincoln hosted the first San Francisco City Championship and remains a traditional venue for that long-running amateur event as well as the San Francisco Junior Championship. Bob Rosburg, Johnny Miller, and George Archer all developed their games here; the practice green is dedicated to Archer's memory. The short yardage, walkable footprint, and quirky elevation changes make it well suited to higher-handicap players, juniors, and visitors who want a historic city muni with ocean and bridge views rather than a long, modern test.
