About Gleneagles Golf Course
Gleneagles Golf Course opened in 1962 as the youngest of San Francisco's municipal courses, tucked into the southern slope of McLaren Park on the city's less-foggy southeast side. The layout was designed by Jack Fleming, who served on Alister MacKenzie's team during the construction of Cypress Point and went on to shape numerous California courses, including Sharp Park and Sharon Heights. The course was renovated in 2010 by architect George Waters, who later worked with Tom Doak on the restoration of Pinehurst No. 2; Waters reshaped the greens to preserve their historic character while improving drainage and pin variety.
On the course
The nine holes play to a par of 36 across roughly 3,195 yards on hilly, tilted terrain, with a second set of tees that lets players stretch the round to 18. Fairways are narrow and often sloped, the bentgrass greens run fast, and the wind off the bay is a near-constant factor. The signature hole is the par-5 sixth, a severe dogleg that stretches over 575 yards and ranks among the hardest long holes in Northern California. The ninth, a 442-yard par 5 that plays sharply uphill and into the prevailing wind, is similarly unforgiving despite its modest yardage.
Who it suits
The course has long carried the nickname "the toughest nine holes in America," and its rough-edged conditioning, uneven lies, and exposed routing reward players who can shape shots and manage the ground game. Old Peculiar's, the Scottish-style pub attached to the clubhouse, overlooks the course and the bay beyond, and is one of the few Bay Area watering holes embedded directly in the flow of play. Gleneagles suits golfers drawn to quirky, strategic municipal courses with Golden Age character rather than those looking for manicured resort conditions.
