About The Quail Golf Club
Quail Lodge Golf Club opened in July 1964 as the Carmel Valley Golf and Country Club, developed by golf enthusiast Edgar Haber on what had previously been a dairy farm in the inland Carmel Valley. The layout was the first 18-hole solo design by Robert Muir Graves, the Berkeley-trained architect who designed, remodeled, or consulted on more than 800 courses during a half-century career. The property sits about seven miles inland from Pebble Beach, far enough east to escape most of the coastal fog while still drawing the same valley breezes.
On the course
The par-71 routing follows the Carmel River across roughly 850 acres of oak-studded meadow, with the river or its associated canyon walls in play on multiple holes. At about 6,500 yards from the back tees, Quail is short by modern standards but walkable, and accuracy off the tee matters more than length. The course hosted the 1975 U.S. Senior Amateur while still operating under its original Carmel Valley name.
Who it suits
In 2015 the layout was restored by Todd Eckenrode of Origins Golf Design. Eckenrode repositioned fairway bunkers into modern landing zones and lined them with tufts of fescue, carved fairway swales into the first three holes, replaced several aging ponds with drought-tolerant native plantings, and added contour to the 16th and 17th. The redesigned par-3 17th now plays to a table-top green with fall-offs on every side, while the long par-3 12th demands a roughly 215-yard tee shot through a narrow chute of trees.
The course suits walkers, mid-handicaps, and visiting golfers who want a quieter Monterey Peninsula round focused on positioning and shot-shaping rather than raw distance.
