About Corral de Tierra Country Club
Corral De Tierra Country Club was designed by Bob E. Baldock and opened in 1959 , the work of a prolific West Coast architect credited with more than 100 courses. The 18-hole, par-72 layout sits in a secluded valley between Salinas and Carmel Valley, in the rolling country that John Steinbeck called the "Pastures of Heaven" in his 1932 short-story cycle. Todd Eckenrode, Mike Poellot and Bob Moore led a renovation in 2000 , updating bunkering and green complexes while preserving Baldock's traditional routing.
On the course
The course plays just under 7,000 yards from the back tees, with a slope of 134 and a course rating of 72.4 . The clubhouse and pro shop sit atop a hill above the property, and the 1st and 10th tees drop downhill into a valley floor ringed by oak-covered ranches and homes. Elevation change across the routing is generally mild; tree-lined fairways, firm rough and quick mid-sized greens define the test rather than dramatic terrain. A water hazard shapes the closing stretch, running along the 15th and wrapping the 18th tee complex into a series of small peninsulas.
Who it suits
Corral de Tierra has long served as a U.S. Open local qualifying venue , which speaks to the demands placed on better players from the championship tees, while forward tees keep the course playable for higher handicaps. It is a private, member-owned club, with reciprocal and guest play limited to specific weekdays. The course suits golfers who value classic 1950s parkland routing, accurate iron play into smaller greens, and a quieter inland alternative to the busier coastal tracks of the Monterey Peninsula.
