About Carmel Valley Ranch
Carmel Valley Ranch Golf Course opened in 1981 as a Pete Dye design, and it remains the only Pete Dye-routed course on the Monterey Peninsula. Architect Gene Bates led a renovation in 2006 that updated conditioning and playability while preserving Dye's original character. The course sits a few miles inland from Carmel-by-the-Sea, tucked into roughly 400 acres at the foothills of the Santa Lucia Mountains, where a warmer microclimate makes it a frequent escape from coastal fog.
On the course
The routing splits into two distinct nines. The front nine plays along the Carmel River on relatively flat valley floor, with tight fairways, tricky greens, and water hazards in repeated play. The back nine climbs roughly 350 feet above the valley floor into oak-studded knolls, delivering significant elevation change, dramatic downhill tee shots, and long views over Carmel Valley. The par-5 10th winds uphill into wooded slopes behind the clubhouse, and the 11th and 13th tees are generally cited as the signature moments, each dropping into the valley below. Other holes pass vineyards, lavender, ponds, and old-growth oak groves.
Who it suits
At a par of 70 and just over 6,200 yards from the back tees, Carmel Valley Ranch is not long by modern standards, but Dye's raised and sunken greens, multi-tiered putting surfaces, dogleg shaping, and bunkering put a premium on club selection and approach play rather than raw distance. The bentgrass greens are quick and well-guarded. The course suits resort players and mid-handicappers who want a scenic, walkable Dye routing without the brute length of a championship setup, while still offering enough teeth from the back tees to challenge low handicaps. It is open to the public and to guests of the adjoining Carmel Valley Ranch resort.
