About Laguna Seca Golf Ranch

Laguna Seca Golf Ranch opened for play in 1970 on land that was once part of a historic California rancho land grant in the hills east of Monterey. The 18-hole layout was designed jointly by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and his son Robert Trent Jones Jr., one of relatively few courses the father-son pair worked on together. The facility is operated by CourseCo, Inc. and remains open to the public, sitting just inland from the Monterey-Salinas corridor near the Laguna Seca raceway.

On the course

The course measures roughly 6,157 yards from the back tees to a par of 71, with a rating of 70.7 and a slope of 127 on rye fairways and greens. Rather than the linksy coastal terrain found closer to the Pacific, the routing follows the natural contours of oak-studded coastal foothills, producing elevated tees, uphill doglegs, and downhill approaches to greens ringed by strategically placed bunkers. The fairways are generally narrow and the greens are larger than average but contoured in ways that make club selection on the approach the central challenge.

Who it suits

The signature hole is the 15th, a 548-yard par 5 that requires forced carries over water on both the tee shot and the approach. Beyond the course itself, Laguna Seca maintains a 13.5-acre practice complex with a 25,000-square-foot rye tee, 23 hitting stations, and separate bent-grass putting and short-game greens with bunkers, one of the larger practice facilities on the Peninsula.

Laguna Seca tends to suit golfers who value shot-shaping and accuracy over raw distance, and players looking for a Monterey-area round at daily-fee rates rather than resort pricing. The combination of elevation change, tight corridors, and Jones-style bunkering rewards a controlled tee ball and a confident mid-iron game.
