About Pacific Grove Golf Links

Pacific Grove Golf Links is a municipal 18-hole course on the northern tip of the Monterey Peninsula, owned by the city of Pacific Grove. Its existence traces to 1931, when Pebble Beach founder Samuel Morse sold the front-nine property to the city for a $10 gold coin on the condition that the land be maintained as a golf course for at least five years. Two-time U.S. Amateur champion H. Chandler Egan, fresh off his 1929 redesign of Pebble Beach with Alister MacKenzie, laid out the original nine holes, and the course opened for play on May 9, 1932.

On the course

For nearly three decades the course stayed at nine holes. In 1960, Jack Neville — the original designer of Pebble Beach Golf Links with Douglas Grant — added a seaside nine on dunes leased from the U.S. Coast Guard at the base of the Point Pinos Lighthouse, the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the West Coast. A new clubhouse built between the nines that same year forced a rerouting of Egan's holes, producing the course's unusual opening sequence of two par 3s, two par 4s, and two par 5s.

Who it suits

The two halves play very differently. Egan's front nine is a tight parkland routing through trees and residential edges, with narrow fairways and small greens. Neville's back nine, particularly the run from 11 through 16, is a true links stretch through windswept dunes with ocean views and the lighthouse in sight on every hole; the 16th plays from an elevated tee toward the coastline with Crespi Pond beside the green. The course measures roughly 5,727 yards to a par of 70, with kikuyu fairways and greens. Widely nicknamed the "Poor Man's Pebble Beach," it suits walkers, history-minded golfers, and visitors who want Monterey coastal golf without resort pricing.

Notable Facts About Pacific Grove Golf Links

  • The front nine was designed by two-time U.S. Amateur champion H. Chandler Egan and opened May 9, 1932, following his 1929 redesign of Pebble Beach with Alister Mackenzie.
  • Jack Neville, who originally designed Pebble Beach with Douglas Grant in 1919, extended the course to 18 holes using land around the base of the Point Pinos Lighthouse leased from the U.S. Coast Guard, opening in 1960.
  • Because the routing of the Egan nine was changed to accommodate the new clubhouse in 1960, a round at Pacific Grove begins unusually with a pair of par threes named 'Little Tombstone' and 'Big Tombstone,' with back-to-back par fives at holes 5 and 6.
