Rancho Maria Golf Club
Santa Maria, California
About Rancho Maria Golf Club
Rancho Maria Golf Club opened in 1965 in the foothills at the southwest edge of the Santa Maria Valley, a Bob E. Baldock design on State Highway 1 about five miles southwest of Santa Maria, near Orcutt. In 1970, brothers Jack and Jim O'Keefe, together with partners Stan Brown and Keith Adams, bought the course, and it has stayed in those families' hands for more than five decades — always run by a PGA member from the O'Keefe clan, a rarity among Central Coast public courses.
On the course
The routing uses its hillside setting honestly: the club's calling card is that no parallel fairways interrupt the quiet, and reviewers point to real elevation change and bunkering as the main defense. From the championship tees it plays 6,390 yards at par 72 — 70.9/125 by the current USGA rating — with an unusual 35/37 split: the back nine stacks three par 5s into the final five holes and closes with back-to-back par 5s of 498 and 522 yards. The 374-yard 4th is the number-one handicap hole, and the regular tees measure 6,148 yards.
Who it suits
It is a value play with a loyal following — 88.5 percent of more than 450 GolfPass reviewers recommend it, praising the welcoming staff and the price, and multiple 2026 reviews report excellent pace of play. Conditioning is honest rather than manicured: recent feedback rates the back nine's fairways good while noting dry stretches on the front. Walking is permitted, though the hills give a carried bag some work.
Practice facilities are a strength for a small club: an all-grass driving range, a large putting green, and a pitching green with a practice bunker, plus lessons, a junior golf camp, and active men's and women's clubs. The Rancho Grill serves breakfast and lunch daily. It fits golfers who want an uncrowded, family-run course with countryside views rather than resort polish.
