Gray's Crossing opened in 2007 as the second course at Tahoe Mountain Club, laid out on the north side of Truckee by PGA Tour veteran Peter Jacobsen and swing theorist Jim Hardy. It is the bigger test of the club's pair: 7,466 yards from the tips at par 72, carrying a 74.7 rating and a slope of 143.

On the course

The design threads through towering Lodgepole and Jeffrey pines with Mt. Rose on the horizon, and it rewards strategic angles more than brute force — the club's own framing is fun-but-challenging traditional Jacobsen design, and that holds up. Environmental care was built in from the start: Gray's Crossing earned Audubon International's Gold Signature Sanctuary certification at its 2007 opening, one of the first courses in California to reach the program's highest designation.

Who it suits

Conditioning is the calling card. The club promotes tournament-grade agronomics, with fast greens the norm rather than a special-occasion setup, and an on-site Golf Academy handles instruction. Truckee sits at roughly 5,800 feet, so the ball carries noticeably farther than at sea level — which takes some of the sting out of that scorecard yardage.

Access is the main consideration for visitors. Gray's Crossing is semi-private: members come first, but public tee times are released at premium resort rates that push past $250 in peak summer. The season is short, too — the course spends much of the year under Sierra snow and is typically playable from late spring through fall. If you want a marquee mountain-golf day in Truckee, this belongs on the shortlist alongside its sibling course Old Greenwood, and the elevation, the pines, and the polish make the green fee easier to understand once you're standing on the first tee.
