Micke Grove Golf Links
Lodi, California
About Micke Grove Golf Links
Micke Grove Golf Links exists because William G. Micke asked for it. The Lodi rancher whose land gifts, beginning in 1938, created Micke Grove Regional Park wrote a public golf course into his will, and after his death in 1961 the Micke Grove Trust funded its construction. San Joaquin County's Board of Supervisors approved the building contract in 1988 — over objections at contentious hearings from zoo supporters worried about expansion room — and designers Garrett Gill and George B. Williams delivered the course, which the club dates to 1990.
On the course
The links-style layout stretches 6,565 yards at par 72 from the Blue tees, with rolling bermuda fairways, bentgrass greens, eight lakes, and 42 bunkers threaded through Lodi's old-vine Zinfandel country. The USGA rates the Blues at 72.0 with a 127 slope. The club's signature hole is a 179-yard par 3 that carries water to a green framed by railroad ties, and the inward nine on the current card packs the muscle: a 584-yard par 5 at the 15th followed by a 223-yard par-3 16th.
Who it suits
Practice facilities are a genuine draw. The 30-station driving range now runs the TrackMan Range system with gamified shot feedback, and bays can be reserved online up to a week ahead; there's also a putting green, a pro shop that handles tee-time bookings, and PGA professionals teaching private and group lessons. Rental clubs run $20 with ID, and carts are first-come, first-served. Sierra Golf Management operates the course for the county.
Micke Grove suits Central Valley golfers hunting value and variety: four rated tee sets from 5,286 yards up, plus a Blue/White combo at 6,293 that splits the difference for mid-handicappers. It also makes an easy day trip — the surrounding regional park holds the Micke Grove Zoo, a Japanese garden, and the San Joaquin County Historical Museum, with Lodi's wine country tasting rooms minutes away.
