About Indian Valley Golf Club
Indian Valley Golf Club opened in 1958, a Robert Nyberg design draped across the oak-studded hills at the western edge of Novato. Nyberg's routing served Marin golfers for nearly half a century before architect Kevin Ramsey led a renovation and redesign that debuted in 2004, modernizing the course while preserving the secluded hill-country character that has defined the property from the start.
On the course
Few Bay Area public courses move up and down as much as this one. The scorecard reads a manageable par 72 at 6,374 yards, rated 70.4 with a 123 slope, but tree-lined doglegs, streams and ponds punish careless lines, and uneven stances are the norm. The back nine climbs so steeply that the club installed a funicular-style lift to carry golfers up its most severe section, and the reward at the top is genuine: regulars single out the view from the 16th tee as one of the best in Marin golf.
Who it suits
Walking is allowed and the setting, with no houses lining the fairways, makes the hike tempting, but most players will be happier in a cart. Reviewers praise how well the hillside terrain drains in winter, when many flatland Bay Area courses turn to mud, and green fees stay modest for the region. It suits golfers who value variety, quiet and shotmaking over length; straight hitters will score, and bombers will spend the day clubbing down.
The practice setup covers a driving range, putting and chipping greens and a practice bunker, with lessons available through the club's teaching professionals; a stocked pro shop and the 19th Hole bar and grill round out the clubhouse. Choose Indian Valley when you want the most dramatic terrain in Novato and a walk-in-the-hills feel, and accept that flat lies are something you earn here rather than expect.
