About Blue Rock Springs Golf Club (West)
The West Course is where golf in Vallejo began. It opened in 1941, laid out by Joe Mortara Sr., the Vallejo golf figure whose name is now on the city's nine-hole course, together with Jack Fleming, the Galway-born builder who served as Alister MacKenzie's construction foreman and later shaped San Francisco's municipal courses, including a 1934 Harding Park remodel. That pedigree shows in the West's classic bones: parkland corridors, small greens, modest length. The club credits a 2006 renovation to Robert Muir Graves, the East Course's architect, with updating the layout without erasing its era.
On the course
Par 71 stretches just over 6,000 yards, and the front nine tells you how the course thinks. Two par 5s of 518 and 536 yards, the 6th and the 8th, bracket a 110-yard par 3 at the 7th, while the 2nd and 4th are short par 4s of barely 300 yards. Length is never the question here; angles are. Mature trees line most fairways, the greens are small and firm, and drives that leak offline find rough that reviewers describe as genuinely thick. Gentle elevation changes follow the natural contours rather than fighting them.
Who it suits
The practical case is value and walkability. The West is the friendlier walk of the two eighteens, with softer climbs than the East, and green fees that led one reviewer to call it one of the best courses for the price in Northern California. Recent reviews praise true-rolling greens and friendly staff while warning about the rough, and pace is generally reasonable. It suits mid and higher handicaps, walkers, and anyone who scores better hitting 5-iron off the tee.
Practice amenities are shared across the 36-hole property: a large driving range with grass and mat stalls, three putting and chipping greens, a stocked golf shop, and food at Cafe Rock, with PGA-certified instructors running lessons, clinics, a women's club, and a twilight league. Choose the West for a historic, tree-lined, thinking-player's round; the hills next door will still be there when you want to be pushed around.
