About Adobe Creek Golf Course
Adobe Creek Golf Course opened in 1990 on roughly 100 acres in eastern Petaluma, just off Highway 101 in southern Sonoma County. The 18-hole, par-72 layout was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., with Kyle Phillips credited as a co-architect during his time at the Jones firm. It operated as a daily-fee, semi-private facility centered on a Mediterranean-style clubhouse at 1901 Frates Road.
On the course
The routing is built in a links style across mostly open, rolling terrain rather than tree-lined corridors. From the back tees the course measures 6,886 yards with a rating of 73.8 and a slope of 131; four sets of tees drop the forward yardage to 5,743. A stream meanders through the property and water comes into play on six holes, fed by five lakes, while 72 strategically placed bunkers frame the bent-grass greens. Wind off the coast is a regular factor in spring and summer, generally arriving from the west and turning many holes into crosswind tests. The greens are known for subtle breaks more than dramatic contour.
Who it suits
The course suits a wide range of players. Forgiving fairway widths and a moderate slope from the forward tees make it accessible to mid- and high-handicap golfers, while the back tees, prevailing wind and bunker placement give single-digit players a legitimate test. Practice facilities include a grass driving range, chipping and putting greens, and a practice bunker.
Adobe Creek has had a turbulent ownership history. It went through Chapter 7 bankruptcy and receivership before being purchased by Sonoma County developer Bill Gallaher in 2011 and reopening that year. Management announced a closure effective January 1, 2017, citing declining play and competition from nearby Rooster Run. Golfers should verify current operating status before planning a round.
